Orton-Gillingham is considered the 'gold standard' for remediation of dyslexia and language-based learning disabilities. This approach, developed so long ago, has stood the test of time as being able to meet the individual needs of learners. As an approach, not a program, its hallmark is individualized lessons designed to match the learning profile of the student. This requires an extensive knowledge base on the part of the teacher as well as a set of planning and teaching skills to support the student as they learn and grow. Its principles of 'direct, explicit, multisensory, sequential, diagnostic, prescriptive' (ortonacademy.org) instruction are the teaching strategies needed for student who need extra support.
Dyslexic students need teaching that meets their needs. OG has shown through time over and over again that it does just that. We need more people trained in methods that will support dyslexics in their ability to be successful at literacy. OG training is now more important than ever!
The Associate Level is intended for practitioners working with struggling readers of all ages, including those with dyslexia, in 1:1 or group settings. The OGA Principles embody the fundamental components of the OG Approach. Because consistent, systematic implementation of the OGA Principles is a crucial contributor to student success, understanding and learning how to apply them in each part of the lesson and through all levels of instruction is a central task of the Associate Level Practitioner. Training is a minimum of 70 hours coursework on the following topics: Reading Acquisition, Word Study & Spelling, Handwriting, Written Expression, Dyslexia & Nature / Needs of Dyslexic Learner, OG Approach History & Principles, Assessment, Lesson Planning. This Associate Part 2 training is 35 hours and provides learning to deepen understanding and knowledge of literacy instruction in a remedial setting.
*Pre-Requisite: Successful completion of Classroom Educator / Associate Part 1 training. The Classroom Educator Practicum is not a requirement. It is customary to take Associate Part 1 and Associate Part 2 with the same Fellow.
After fulfilling all requirements, each participant will receive a certificate of completion for the training hours.
Trainees may continue their OG learning by choosing the following:
-Associate Level Practicum: The Practicum is 100 hours of supervised teaching, including the submission of ten observations. This involves in-depth review, with feedback, of lesson plans, teaching strategy, and mentoring. It is arranged, at an additional fee, subsequent to the successful completion of the coursework. Trainees may then submit an application to OGA for membership at the Associate Level.
