Orton-Gillingham is an instructional approach designed to support learners with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. As an approach, not a program, it emphasizes instruction that is responsive to the individual learner. Grounded in the science of reading and informed by linguistics and cognitive science, Orton-Gillingham focuses on how language works and how students learn to read and spell. Instruction, aligned with structured literacy, is direct, explicit, multisensory, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive. This combination of teaching literacy through language and structure with personalized responsiveness provides the clarity and intentional teaching needed to support these students to be successful.
This approach developed by Dr. Sam Orton and Anna Gillingham has stood the test of time. It is supported both by the science of reading and a time-tested body of knowledge and practices. Students with dyslexia and learning differences need instruction to meet their needs and OG is just that.

The Associate Level is intended for practitioners working with struggling readers of all ages, including those with dyslexia, in 1:1 or group settings. The OGA Principles embody the fundamental components of the OG Approach and learning how to apply them in each part of the lesson is a central task of the Associate Level Practitioner. Training is a minimum of 70 hours coursework on the following topics: Reading Acquisition, Word Study & Spelling, Handwriting, Written Expression, Dyslexia & Nature / Needs of Dyslexic Learner, OG Approach History & Principles, Assessment, Lesson Planning.
Associate Training is comprised of Part 1 and Part 2, where each part is 35 hours. It is customary to take Associate Part 1 and Associate Part 2 with the same Fellow. It is not possible by-pass Part 1 and start with Part 2. As well, Classroom Educator training hours cannot be applied to Associate training.
After fulfilling all requirements, each participant will receive a certificate of completion for the training hours.
Trainees may continue their OG learning by choosing the following:
-Associate Level Practicum: The Practicum is 100 hours of supervised teaching, including the submission of ten observations. This involves in-depth review, with feedback, of lesson plans, teaching strategy, and mentoring. It is arranged, at an additional fee, subsequent to the successful completion of the coursework. Trainees may then submit an application to OGA for membership at the Associate Level.
