Practicum explained
Overview:
The Practicum is the mentorship by a Fellow of your practical application of the OG Approach. During the training, there is a lot to learn and there are opportunities for practice of procedures and planning lesson plans. This is often not enough practice to prepare practitioners to be able to apply the OG Principles in practice to meet student needs. It is one thing to learn about the OG Approach, but it is something completely different to implement it over a duration of time through the various parts of the scope and sequence. To ensure that trainees are adequately prepared to support student's literacy growth, the supervised Practicum provides support, feedback, and additional learning. In a way, it is a type of apprenticeship. The experience of coaching with specific targeted feedback on what is going well and on next steps is invaluable to becoming a successful OG Practitioner.
Details:
-The successful completion of the Practicum is a requirement for application to the OGA at all membership levels. There are different practicum requirements at each level. See explanations below.
-All requirements of the Practicum can be fulfilled via technology. The lesson can be recorded and sent along with the lesson plans for review. The Practicum does not have to be in-person.
-It is customary to complete the Practicum with the Fellow/FIT who did the training.
-The Practicum must begin within one year of completing the training.
-The Practicum is paid per submission at the cost of $200/Observation.
Classroom Educator Practicum
The details of the Classroom Educator Practicum are as explained below.
-50 total teaching hours over minimum of 8 months.
-Number of observations: 5.
-Teaching: Small group or Classroom.
Associate Level Practicum
The Associate Level Practicum is composed of the following:
-100 total teaching hours over a minimum of 8 months.
-Number of observations: 10.
-Teaching: 1:1 a student who has indications of a language-learning difficulty.
