The Center for Effective Reading Instruction defines a 'Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist' as a person who provide targeted or intensive reading intervention services to individuals and small groups where the primary need is in decoding. These student(s) may be those with dyslexia, in need of extensive remediation, and/or learning disability.

-Pre-Requisite: Structured Literacy training (70 hours).
-Practicum/Fieldwork: The Practicum is an average of 24-36 weeks of 50 hours of supervised teaching, including the submission of three formal observations (lesson plans and video of teaching). The experience involves in-depth review, with feedback, of lesson plans, teaching strategy, and mentoring. A 'Case Study' with pre/post data outlining the effectiveness of intervention is written at the end of the Practicum. Trainees may then submit, after successfully fulfilling all requirements, their application to the Center for Effective Reading Instruction to be a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist.
