Structured Literacy supports 'Language for Life' through teaching literacy through language and structure. It is an evidence-based framework for teaching reading and writing grounded in the science of reading. It prioritizes accurate word recognition and spelling as the foundation for comprehension and written expression.
Endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association, Structured Literacy is best practice for students with dyslexia and effective for all learners. Instruction explicitly addresses phonology, sound–symbol relationships, syllable patterns, morphology, syntax, and semantics through teaching that is explicit, systematic and cumulative, and diagnostic.
By defining what to teach and how to teach it, Structured Literacy builds the essential skills students need for fluent reading and comprehension, strong spelling and writing, and long-term academic success.

This 45-hour Structured Literacy training is aligned with the International Dyslexia Association’s (IDA) Knowledge and Practice Standards and prepares you to teach all aspects of reading and writing. The training emphasizes explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction informed by linguistics, cognitive science, and education research, ensuring you understand not just what to teach, but why.
Trainees will learn to integrate phonology, sound–symbol correspondence, syllable instruction, morphology, syntax, and semantics into daily instruction, using ongoing assessment to guide responsive teaching. Designed for elementary classrooms, this training supports strong core instruction that benefits all learners while reducing risk for reading difficulties through informed, intentional, and evidence-based practice.
After fulfilling all requirements, each participant will receive a certificate of completion for the training hours.
Trainees may continue their Structured Literacy learning by choosing one of the following:
1) Taking the 'Knowledge and Practice Examination for Effective Reading Instruction' (KPEERI) and applying to the Center for Effective Reading Instruction at the Classroom Teacher level.
2) Dyslexia Interventionist Training. This training provides the theory and practical knowledge for teaching students with dyslexia, language disabilities and those needing extensive remediation.
