The Center for Effective Reading Instruction defines a 'Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist' as a professional who provides targeted literacy intervention and support to students and small groups with complex reading and writing profiles. These profiles include dyslexia and learning disabilities.
This practitioner demonstrates the ability to work with students whose needs are: basic decoding, advanced multi-syllabic decoding, morphology, comprehension, written expression.

Pre-Requisite: Structured Literacy Training (70 Hours), Interventionist Practicum.
Practicum/ Fieldwork:
-The Practicum is composed of three different student profiles: 1) basic decoding, 2) comprehension, 3) advanced multi-syllabic word reading.
-Each of the three profiles is an average of 24-36 weeks of 50 hours of supervised teaching, including the submission of three formal observations (lesson plans and video of teaching) for a total of 150 hours.
-The experience involves in-depth review, with feedback, of lesson plans, teaching strategy, and mentoring. A 'Case Study' with pre/post data outlining the effectiveness of intervention is written for each student profile.
-Trainees may then submit, after successfully fulfilling all requirements, their application to the Center for Effective Reading Instruction to be a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist.
