Orton-Gillingham Training Grounded in Language and Structure
Orton-Gillingham training provides educators with the knowledge and instructional framework needed to teach literacy through language and structure. Grounded in structured literacy and aligned with the Science of Reading, this training supports educators in teaching reading, writing, and spelling to a wide range of learners, including students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.
Orton-Gillingham training emphasizes both theoretical understanding and supervised practical application, ensuring educators understand the principles that guide instruction and how to apply them through well-designed lessons.
A Research-Aligned Foundation for Effective Literacy Instruction
Each Orton-Gillingham course begins with foundational study of literacy and language development, informed by research in linguistics, cognitive science, and neuroscience. This knowledge forms the basis for understanding how reading develops—from accurate decoding to fluent reading for meaning—and how instruction can be adjusted to meet individual learner needs.
Instruction is guided by the core Orton-Gillingham principles: explicit, systematic, cumulative, diagnostic, and individualized teaching, consistent with OGA expectations.

All coursework reflects the standards and expectations of the Orton-Gillingham Academy, with emphasis on fidelity to principles rather than scripts or programs.
Why Orton-Gillingham Instruction Matters Now
Literacy is a human right, and all students deserve best-first instruction that is clear, explicit, and grounded in evidence. Teaching literacy through language and structure ensures learners develop the foundational skills needed to access curriculum, participate fully in learning, and reach their potential.
Orton-Gillingham–informed instruction supports equitable access to literacy by making the structure of language visible and learnable for all students.

OG is a teaching approach developed Dr Orton and Ms Gillingham in the early 1900s. It is explicit multi-sensory teaching of reading, spelling, penmanship, and writing designed to meet the needs of each learner. It is not a scripted program. Instruction is completely individualized to ensure student success.
